"Empire state of mind" è il secondo singolo di Jay-Z, ma non da solo questa volta, bensì in duetto con la splendida Alicia Keys. Nel frattempo Jay-Z è in testa alle classifiche rap, a quelle R&B, ma anche per ben due settimane al 1° posto della hot 200 di Billboard e sta conquistando le classifiche di tutto il mondo con il suo undicesimo album in studio "The Blueprint 3".

La canzone, prodotta da Shux e co-prodotta da Janet “Jnay” Sewell-Ulepic & Angela Hunte, vede la partecipazione eccellente della voce più talentuosa degli ultimi anni, Alicia Keys. Empire State of Mind è un inno alla città natale di Jay-Z e Alicia Keys, New York, ed utilizza un campionamento del brano Love on a Two-Way Street dei The Moments.
Nella top ten dei singoli più venduti in Gran Bretagna per quindici settimane, il pezzo sbarca sul resto del mercato europeo, dopo l’investitura ufficiale da parte della critica, che ha decretato il duetto tra il rapper e Alicia Keys, la migliore e riuscita collaborazione musicale degli ultimi cinque anni.Il video musicale, diretto interamente da Hype Williams, è stato filmato il 1 ottobre 2009 ad Harlem, Times Square e nei pressi del Ground Zero a New York City, e mostra lo Yankee Stadium e l’Ebbets Field, luoghi molto familiari ai due cantanti amercani.



Quasi interamente girato in bianco e nero (tranne nelle scene finale della gradinata colorata di rosso), il videoclip ricostruisce squarci di vita quotidiana newyorkese attraverso i personaggi che animano le vie del centro. I locali, le uscite della metropolitana, le case sfarzose della metropoli sono la giusta cornice per l’omaggio alla città. A Time Square, immaginariamente accompagnata dall’inseparabile pianoforte, Alicia Keys tesse le lodi della vicina Brooklyn in cui è cresciuta.
Vedute aeree di New York si confondono con le immagini da terra dei due artisti, che, di sera, in una caoticissima e affollatissima città, passeggiano, cantando amabilmente tra taxi gialli e gente che corre a prendere la metropolitana per ritornarsene a casa.
