Justin Bieber è nato a Stratford, Ontario, cresciuto dalla madre, rimasta sola dopo l'abbandono del padre di Justin, a dodici anni ha partecipato a una gara canora a Stratford, nella quale si è classificato secondo dopo aver cantato So Sick di Ne-Yo.
Nel 2007, Bieber e la madre hanno iniziato a pubblicare cover di canzoni di Usher, Chris Brown, Stevie Wonder, Justin Timberlake e Ne-Yo su YouTube. Il giovane è stato così avvicinato da una società di Toronto chiamata Rapid Discovery Media, che lo ha assistito nel creare account su YouTube e MySpace e nel produrre, montare e promuovere i suoi video.
I suoi video su YouTube lo hanno fatto conoscere al suo futuro manager, che lo ha accompagnato ad Atlanta, in Georgia, per consultarsi con il cantante Usher. In seguito Bieber ha iniziato la sua carriera da professionista, firmando un contratto con la casa discografica Island.
Justin Bieber, dopo la pubblicazione dei quattro singoli digitali One Time, One Less Lonely Girl, Love Me e Favorite Girl, che sono entrati tra le prime quindici posizioni della classifica canadese dei singoli e tra le prime quaranta di quella statunitense, il 17 novembre 2009 Bieber ha pubblicato il suo primo EP, My World. Bieber è l'unico artista nella storia di Billboard ad annoverare quattro singoli tratti dall'album d'esordio My World 2.0, uscito nel 2010, nella Top 40 delle Hot 100 prima dell'uscita dell'album stesso.
