Il regista è Wayne Isham (già collaboratore di Bon Jovi, Pink Floyd e Britney Spears), che ha scelto come location ideale alla commemorazione in danza il Pantages theatre di Hollywood, che fu il set del video di You are not alone, grande successo del 1995.
“Il tema del video rappresenta la lotta che ogni artista o musicista intraprende per riuscire a realizzare i suoi sogni”, si legge in una nota di Sony Music.
Il brano è scritto da Michael Jackson e Brad Buxer, e segue il successo del primo singolo, Hold my hand, cantato con Akon.
“Il mondo non era ancora pronto ad ascoltare questo singolo quando uscì su internet due anni fa e questo ci turbò molto. Ora che è stata ultimata è finalmente giunto il momento ed è diventata una canzone incredibilmente emozionante. Sono profondamente orgoglioso d’aver avuto la possibilità di lavorare con Michael, uno dei miei idoli”, affermava il rapper americano sulla canzone.
Proprio come Hold my hand, Hollywood tonight è stata ripescata dallo stesso Jacko nel 2007: faceva parte delle registrazioni di Invincible, album del 2001.
Michael, il primo lavoro postumo uscito per la Sony, ha venduto 3 milioni di copie a una settimana dalla pubblicazione.
A soli tre mesi, inoltre, ha ottenuto la certificazione di platino in 17 paesi: Gran Bretagna, Germania, Francia, Italia, Spagna, Danimarca, Polonia, Russia, Austria, Belgio, Repubblica Ceca, Canada, India, Cina, Taiwan, Corea e Medio Oriente.
